Tales of Adventure

"Racing is life, everything before or after is just waiting." When Steve McQueen's character uttered those words in the movie Le Mans, he probably willingly overlooked the fact that racing can also be a matter of life and death. The risks associated with racing may be understated in many series, but for the hundreds that take part in the Dakar rally, it's an understood fact of life.

As if the risks of crashes aren’t enough, the rally winds its way through some of the most dangerous terrain and regions in the world. Participants not only face the harsh and unforgiving landscape, but also occasional bandits and warlords. And though the risks are high, many view Dakar as the ultimate test of man and machine, as well as an outright adventure.

Auto Week is running a great article about Dakar calling it "The Last Great Race". The story details several hair raising incidents including a run in with the local militia, people stranded in the middle of the Sahara desert and a bandit related car-jacking. It’s a very good look at an event that's more Indian Jones and Indianapolis 500. Even if you’re not a racing fan I think you'll enjoy this one, it truly is a tale of adventure.
